Shantipur, West Bengal: In a major crackdown on narcotics smuggling, the Shantipur police in West Bengal’s Nadia district arrested two inter-district drug traffickers during a late-night covert operation, seizing 10 kilograms of marijuana.
Apart from the contraband, which was being transported in a commercial quantity, the police recovered Rs 5,000 in cash, three smartphones used to coordinate with clients, and a scooter used for transporting the drugs.
The arrested individuals have been identified as 48-year-old Sujit Nandi, a resident of Kalna in Purba Bardhaman district, and Anjan Sarkar, a resident of Krishnanagar in Nadia.
According to police sources, the arrest took place near the Shubh brick kiln in the Krishnakalitala area of Shantipur. Acting on a precise tip-off about an impending large-scale drug deal in the area, a special police team cordoned off the location.
During the stakeout, officers spotted two suspicious men speeding on a scooter toward the Guptipara ferry ghat in an attempt to flee. The police intercepted the vehicle and, upon searching them, recovered the packages of marijuana.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the duo operated a highly active inter-district smuggling network. Commenting on the arrest, a senior police official stated that the accused were operating as couriers to deliver consignments across district borders. The police are currently interrogating them to trace the mastermind behind the syndicate and break the supply chain.
A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused are scheduled to be produced before the Krishnanagar Court on Friday, where the police will seek their custody for further interrogation.
