Om Birla Urges West Bengal MLAs to Champion Solutions and State Renaissance
Kolkata: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated a two day Orientation Programme for newly elected Members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, urging legislators to rise above narrow constituency politics and lead the state’s democratic renaissance.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who graced the inaugural session alongside Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and other dignitaries, emphasised the need for effective governance and people centric policies in his address.
Shri Birla called upon MLAs to focus legislative debates on practical solutions rather than mere criticism, stressing that constructive dialogue backed by facts and research strengthens democracy. He advised continuous learning through study of past debates and global best practices, describing the House as the greatest classroom.

Highlighting Bengal’s rich legacy of visionaries like Raja Rammohan Roy, Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the Speaker expressed confidence that the state would reclaim its position as a centre of intellectual, cultural and economic excellence while contributing to Viksit Bharat@2047.
He also underscored the transformative role of digital technology and artificial intelligence in modern legislatures. The programme, organised by PRIDE under Lok Sabha Secretariat in collaboration with the West Bengal Assembly, features sessions on legislative procedures, ethics, and digital tools. It concludes tomorrow with Governor R.N. Ravi delivering the valedictory address.
