IMA Proposes Naming West Burdwan Medical College After Kazi Nazrul Islam; Minister Assures Push for Trauma Centre
Asansol, 2 July: The Asansol branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has urged the West Bengal government to name the proposed medical college in West Burdwan after national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The proposal was submitted through a memorandum on National Doctors’ Day to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Health Minister Dr. Sharadwat Mukherjee, Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul, and PWD & Public Health Engineering Minister Dr. Ajay Poddar.Speaking at the Doctors’ Day programme organised at the IMA Bhavan in Asansol, Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul described the proposal as a “very good suggestion” and said she would place it before the Chief Minister and the Health Minister for consideration. The minister also said efforts are underway to operationalise the long-pending Trauma Centre at Asansol District Hospital. She stated that while the previous government had created space for the facility, it could not be made functional due to a lack of infrastructure and specialist doctors. Discussions have already been held with the Health Department to address the issue.Commenting on healthcare, Paul said the state government plans to implement the Ayushman Bharat scheme in West Bengal and that beneficiaries are expected to receive their cards this month.IMA Asansol Chief Patron Dr. P.C. Maji said the association welcomed the establishment of a new medical college in West Burdwan and proposed that it be named “Kazi Nazrul Islam Medical College”, preferably at or near Churulia, the birthplace of the poet. He said the move would honour Nazrul’s legacy while helping develop the area as a major centre for education and healthcare. The memorandum also stated that the proposal reflects the long-standing aspirations of both the medical fraternity and the public, expressing hope that the state government would consider it favourably.
