Ministry of Mines and Steel Organizes 6th Scrap Recycling and Waste Utilization Drive in Kolkata as part of AKAM

Kolkata : The Ministry of Mines and the Ministry of Steel, in collaboration with the JNARDDC and Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI), are organizing the 6th Scrap Recycling and Waste Utilization Drive under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) – CIRCULAR ECONOMY Campaign – 2023. This event is part of the government’s initiative to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence, promoting a sustainable and circular economy in India.
Under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030, the emphasis is placed on the circular economy, waste reduction, and environmental pollution control. The scrap metal recycling industry plays a vital role in achieving carbon neutralization targets and reaping the benefits of a circular economy.
Recognizing India’s depleting ore resources, the government is transitioning from a linear to a circular economy model, following the principles of Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Recover, Redesign, and Remanufacture (6R). This shift aims to foster sustainability and maximize resource utilization.
The 6th Scrap Recycling (Ferrous & Non-Ferrous) and Waste Utilization Drive, organized by the Material Recycling Association of India and JNARDDC, will take place on June 15, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. onwards at Hotel Taj Bengal, Kolkata. This event, titled “Sustainable & Circular Bharat: Towards Zero Waste in Metals Processing,” is aligned with the AKAM – CIRCULAR ECONOMY Campaign and emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices in the metal recycling industry.
Distinguished guests including Mr. U C Joshi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Shri Subhash Kumar, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Shri S K Gupta, CMD, MSTC, Dhawal Shah, Sr VP, MRAI, Aniruddha Jhunjunwala, Director, MRAI, Dr. Anupam Agnihotri, Director, JNARDDC, and other notable personalities from the industry will grace the occasion as Guests of Honor.
The conference aims to raise awareness about scrap recycling and waste utilization while showcasing best practices in melting, scrap segregation, and processing. It also aims to address the challenges faced by the metal recycling industry based in West Bengal. The event will feature discussions on adopting new technologies to achieve zero carbon emissions and zero waste, aligning with the sustainable development goals and the mission of “LiFE” (Lifestyle for the Environment) promoted by the Prime Minister.
As part of the program, an exclusive two-day plant visit will be organized for officials from the Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Mines, NIT Naroda, and Government Engineering Colleges Metallurgical Students. The objective is to provide insights into the recycling practices and processes at Ferrous Plants such as Brand Alloys and Steel Crackers, as well as Non-Ferrous Plants including Manaksia Aluminium, Eastern Copper, Gadia Aluminium, and Leadstone Energy.
By encouraging sustainability-driven changes and adopting new technologies, the campaign aims to maximize the metal industry’s contribution to a sustainable society while protecting and preserving the environment. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting a circular economy and achieving the sustainable development goals, ensuring a brighter and greener future for India.
